Sarah Roper, Principal Oboe of the Real Orquesta Sinfónica de Sevilla, Spain, since 1996, was born in New Zealand but grew up and was educated in England. She studied the oboe at the Royal Academy of Music, London, with George Caird and Celia Nicklin, whilst reading music at London University simultaneously. At the RAM she was awarded the Robert Rendell prize. The “DAAD” (German government) scholarship enabled her to study at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik, Karlsruhe, Germany, with Thomas Indermühle, attaining distinction for the postgraduate “Künstlerische Ausbildung 1” diploma.
Sarah held the Associate Oboe position in the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada, Spain, 1995-1996 and was the Associate Oboe in the Auckland Philharmonia, New Zealand, 2008-2009. She has performed and recorded as Principal Oboe with Klangforum, Vienna and orchestras in Spain, Germany (SWR Orchester) and the UK (BBC Philharmonic, Halle Orchestra and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra).
She is a founding member of the chamber music groups Sevilla Wind Quintet, Sono Reale, Cuarteto Emispherio (CD CC2030 “Quartets for Oboe and Strings” with www.oboeclassics.com), Trio Ágora and Trio MeSaMor which perform regularly in festivals throughout Spain. As a recitalist and soloist, Sarah has appeared in the UK, Austria, Germany, Spain, Italy, Hungary, Czech Republic, Japan, USA, Brazil, Australia and New Zealand.
In 2013 Sarah gave solo recitals during the first Monteverdi Oboe Festival in Bolzano, Italy, and the Asociación de Fagotistas y Oboístas de España (AFOES, Spanish Double Reed Society) Conference in Madrid. She also performed solo recitals during the International Double Reed Society (IDRS) Conferences 2012 Ohio, 2015 Tokyo and 2014 New York, where she served on the jury of the “Young Artist Competition”. In 2017 she served on the jury of the "International Gillet- FoxCompetition” in Appleton, USA, and gave masterclasses and performed in the 1st International ABPD (Brazilian Double Reed Society) Conference in João Pessoa, Brazil.
Sarah, a professor of the Master’s degree in Orchestral Interpretation at the Barenboim-Said Foundation in Seville,during the academic course 2017-2018, is regularly invited to give masterclasses during international summer courses and at music schools such as the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik and Darstellende Kunst, Stuttgart, the Royal Academy of Music, London, Auckland University, NZ and the Australian Double Reed Society in Adelaide. She collaborates with local youth orchestras such as the Youth Orchestra of South Spain (OJA). She is a founding member of the Asociación de Doble Caña de Sevilla (Seville Double Reed Society), holds the International Relations post in AFOES and since 2016 serves as Second Vice President of the IDRS.
Sarah is an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music. She plays a Howarth of London LXV oboe.
